For years and years, after I joined journalism as a career in late 1961, I was a huge ‘DEMOCRACY ENTHUSIAST’. Earlier in my college and university days I had, alongwith millions of my fellow countrypersons, had welcomed and supported the advent of ‘military rule’ in the country—hoping that the corrupt practices, nepotism and cronyism that had started to characterize our governing order would be rooted out with an iron hand by General Ayub Khan and his team. But by the time I joined Daily Kohistan my earlier romance with the military rule had faded and my mind had started getting filled with frustration and anger at the emergence of a new set of practitioners of corruption and misuse of authority. This disenchantment led me to adopt DEMOCRACY as my new political religion. I was enamoured with the fascinated slogans like “Government of the people, by the people and for the people.”
In fact I became a committed activist in the cause of Democracy. In my own way I became a crusader against Field Marshal Ayub Khan’s regime, a fervent supporter of the Bhutto’s revolt against his mentor and boss, and then crusader against Bhutto himself. From 1962 to 1974, I wielded my pen against the rulers with the same passion and resolve as a faith-driven soldier wields his sword against the enemy.
Then I faded away into the world of Advertising— mentally defeated by the forces that controlled the Society and the State.
Today my fascination with the word DEMOCRACY stands completely obliterated. The course of events since the advent of the so-called Democratic Era after General Zia ul Hque’s plane was blown up in the air on August 17, 1988, has finally landed me in a zone where I can’t but believe that no such thing in practice exists as ‘Government of the people, by the people and for the people’. It is the Biggest Lie.
President Trump of America is certainly not the people. He is a stinkingly rich businessman who has risen to rulership by a surge created by the power of his wealth. Is Nawaz Sharif THE PEOPLE?
Is Asif Ali Zardari THE PEOPLE?
Is Khushid Shah THE PEOPLE?
A government is a government. The important thing is ‘Whether it is a Good or a Bad Government.’
I have come to hate jargons and clichés and abstract ideals.
I have come to believe that we have to return to Allah and to plead to Him to resume His Rulership over us.
