The CM Sind has let the cat out of the bag. He has let it be known in so many words that the reason why his government is reluctant to extend legal cover to the ongoing operation of the Rangers in Karachi aimed at restoring law and order in the provincial metropolis is that they have overstepped their mandate which did not include action on their part against corruption. Has the CM gone gaga? Does he not think that corruption also contribute a lot to the disturbance of law and order in the society? The Rangers not only want extension of the legal cover to their present operation against the criminals but also a constitutional umbrella allowing them to penetrate much deeper into the Rural Sind where reportedly many criminals required by them have taken refuge after fleeing from Karachi. The MQM has correctly moved the provincial assembly of Sind demanding extension of the mandate of the Rangers to the entire Sind instead of focussing only on Karachi. The MQM is right when it says the Rangers’s operation should be across-the-board instead of its focus on it only. Let us hope that by the time this column sees the light of day, saner counsel would have prevailed in the corridors of power. The rulers in Sind should facilitate the task of the Rangers instead of creating bottlenecks in their way. If the Sind government tried to dilly-dally in the matter the relationship between the Sind government and the Armed forces might be damaged beyond repair.
The preliminary investigation conducted into the alleged corrupt practices of Dr Asim Hussain by the Rangers and the Karachi police is at variance with each other. It is understandable that the local police under the tacit instruction of the provincial government of the PPP wants to hush up the cases against Dr Asim Hussain, a close buddy of Zardari. This is the precise reason why the Rangers have moved the court against the officers of the prosecution branch of Karachi’s police who have been going out of the way to give a clean bill of health to Dr Asim Hussain. They want their replacement.
