Kashmir Solidarity Day

Syeda Mazhar
In true faith, the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sardar Yaqoob Khan stated on Tuesday that observing Solidarity Day with zeal every year was testimony to Pakistan’s unflinching resolve towards the Kashmir cause. He said that February 5 being observed every year as Solidarity Day injects new spirit in the Freedom Movement against the brutal Indian Occupation of Kashmir.
This is true, each year the Kashmir Solidarity Day is observed throughout Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and across the world capitals with renewed pledge and collective resolve to show the fullest support of the government of Pakistan, the people of Pakistan and the Pakistani Kashmiris living abroad to pledge support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and their just cause for the right of self-determination.
It is pertinent to remind ourselves and the international world that Pakistan’s stance will not budge and to reiterate our resolve regarding the resolution of Kashmir issue on this Kashmir day. 5thFebruary is also an important day to pay homage to Kashmiri martyrs and express our solidarity with the people of Kashmir, still suffering under repressive Indian occupation rule. On this day the entire Pakistani nation expresses solidarity with Kashmiris sharing their grief and pain of sufferings in the wake of Indian military brutalities.
The unresolved Jammu and Kashmir issue has been at the heart of conflicts and tensions between Pakistan and India for more than five decades. The same has been recognized by many UN resolutions. It is about the exercise of the right of self-determination by the Kashmiris. The Kashmir dispute fuels the conventional and nuclear arms race between India and Pakistan and bleeding both their economies. Both countries have gone to war on three occasions over the issue and the possibility of war between the two countries has become dangerous given their nuclear capability.
India considers the occupation of Kashmir final and thereby rejects talks of plebiscite. They consider Kashmir as an integral part of India and officially deny that Kashmir is disputed. Pakistan on the other hand vehemently considers Kashmir as a disputed territory and has insisted on implementation of a plebiscite as per UN resolutions.
While in Kashmir the Kashmiris continue with their freedom movement rejecting the illegitimate occupation by the Indian Army. Due to this uprising of the youth and their freedom movement the Indian Security Forces resorted to illegal detention of Kashmiri youth, women and children, tortured them savagely and murdered them cold bloodedly. Grave human rights violations by the Indian Security forces continue to be reported. Arbitrary arrests, torture, rape and extra judicial killings continue on. Since 1990 thousands of people are estimated to have been killed in Kashmir about half of them were civilians. The freedom movement continues despite Indian Army’s wicked and atrocious treatment of Kashmiri people. Notwithstanding the Indian Army’s tyranny and havoc the Kashmiri youth still fight for their cause with the same vigor and passion. They believe that their efforts and sacrifices will result in their dream of freedom.
The International community should play its role to help resolve the Kashmir issue. They realize that it has the potential of being one of the most dangerous disputes in the world as it may trigger a nuclear conflict in the worst case scenario. Solution of this lingering issue will bring peace and prosperity in the region.
On 5th February Pakistani masses are standing shoulder to shoulder with their Kashmiri brethren for the liberation of Kashmir. All over the world Pakistani Community display unity and solidarity with Kashmiri’s on 5th February 2016. The day will be marked by public processions, special prayers in mosques for the liberation of Kashmir and peaceful protests that are carried out against the Indian oppression of Kashmir. Processions, rallies, conferences and seminars are also organized by many political and religious organizations. Wherein public figures speak up and address masses to support the Kashmiri freedom struggle. These activities reflect the Pakistani stance on the Kashmir issue for International World as well.
Another common spectacle on this day is the formation of a human chain on all major routes leading to AJK from Pakistan. People stand in rows with their hands clasped forming a human chain on all major crossings into AJK from Pakistan. This symbolizes unity and solidarity to reassure Kashmiris that they are not alone in their struggle for freedom.
Special cultural programs and festivals are held to promote Kashmiri culture and tradition. News and entertainment channels air special programs, talk shows, dramas and Kashmiri songs about the oppression and brutalities suffered by Kashmiris over the years.
Kashmir day is a public holiday in Pakistan and AJK, dedicated to show Pakistan’s support and unity with the Indian occupied Kashmir, their ongoing freedom struggle, and to pay homage to Kashmiri martyrs who lost their lives fighting for Kashmir’s freedom. Pakistan will continue to extend moral, political and diplomatic support to Kashmiris in their just struggle for right to self-determination.
