Samjhota Express Carnage; Another Case Of Indian Brutality

Amna Razzaq

The recent state of affairs in Indian army, especially with regard to its hostilities towards Pakistan on the LoC in Kashmir sector and also along the working boundary between the two countries emerges as a result of deep routed nexus between the extremist Hindu militant outfits of Hindutva ideology that are now united under the umbrella of ruling BJP government and the Indian army and this nexus of evils is not only threatening Pakistan but is surfacing as a major threat to regional peace, reveal the investigations of The Daily Mail. The Daily Mail’s investigations indicate that the Army-Hindutva nexus was first and very clearly exposed by India’s own investigating agencies as the Joint Commissioner of Mumbai’s Anti Terrorism squad (ATS, Hemant Karkare, during ATS’s investigations under his command, into high profile terror incidents, including the Samjhota Express attack, Malegaon attack and Mecca Masjid attack, crystal clearly led the investigators to undeniable nexus of Hindutva extremists and Indian army. It is to remember that in the early hours of 19th February 2007, two crude incendiary bombs exploded inside the security-sealed Samjhota Express train from Delhi to the border-post of Attari in which 68 Pakistani passengers were killed. At least 13 other people were also seriously injured who were admitted in New Delhi\’s Safdarjung Hospital. It was indeed a harrowing and despicable act because innocent people were killed who had boarded the train to meet their near and dear ones. Exact five years later, on 18 February 2007, on the anniversary of Godhra tragedy, another play was staged. This time it was Samjhota Express; a train shuttled between New Delhi and Lahore. The train havoc took place at a time when the then foreign minister of Pakistan Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri was to hold talks with his Indian counterpart on taking their bilateral peace process forward, resolving the Kashmir dispute and signing a nuclear risk reduction accord. Soon after the incident, as the script said, Delhi immediately accused elements in Pakistan of masterminding the attack. So much so that weeks later Indian officials, even at a first meeting of the joint terror mechanism handed over to the Pakistani side what they claimed was a picture of the alleged ‘perpetrator of the attack’. The Indian government danced to their media’s tunes initially and started pointing the finger at Pakistan for the terror attacks. Widespread condemnation of Pakistan developed, particularly from the then opposition BJP and Pakistan was accused of harboring terrorists and intentionally derailing peace attempts with India. However, soon the loose script messed up the production and it turned out as a flop drama, when the bombing appeared to be more linked to a Hindu fundamentalist group Abhinav Bharat within India than with any terrorist organization within Pakistan. This incident was in fact an act of terrorism and can be termed as a heinous crime. Indian Railways Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav had said: \”It is sabotage; it is an act of terrorism like the one in Mumbai in July 2006 that killed 186 people\”. He should not have drawn parallels between Mumbai trains and Samjhota Express blasts, because the bogies in Mumbai train were not locked whereas bogies of Samjhota were not only locked from inside but also sealed from outside, and they were virtually trapped to death. Secondly, there was a security check of the passengers bound for India or Pakistan on Samjhota Express. In 2007, Indian agencies have accused Harkat-ul-Jehad-i-Islami activist alias Bilal of being involved in Samjhauta blasts when two coaches were completely gutted killing 70 people and more than hundred injured. India often named Muslim organizations, which in fact did not exist. The notorious terrorist, Swami Aseem Anand, was not only involved in the attack on Samjhota Express but had also murdered 119 persons, according to the sources. The shameless Aseemanand had twice admitted in the court that he was involved in Samjhota Express incident. Once he did so in December 2010 and then again in January 2011. The court had given him 48 hours and had asked the investigation teams to keep away from him so that it could be determined that he was not accepting the responsibility under duress. However RSS’s Rambo did not change his confessional statement even after remaining in judicial custody for 48 hours and reiterated that he had carried out that terrorist activity. However even after these confessions, no serious action had taken by Indian government and his bail was accepted by the authorities. However, the Indian government had refused to challenge or hinder the decision of the Supreme Court regarding bail of Swami Aseem Anand. It may be recalled that 88 people were burnt alive in the incident of burning the Samjhota Express
This terrorist was also reportedly been involved in the bomb blast at Dargah Ajmer Sharif in Rajhasthan in October same year. Swami Aseem Anand had also remained a zealous activist of the extremist Hindu organization RSS and was the main character in its anti-Muslim activities of the outfit.
On the demand of Human Right Watch and other non-governmental organizations, India however has acknowledged that Hindu extremist organizations were behind this terrorist attack. In this age of information technology and media explosion, India could not hide the links between the Indian army the Hindu extremist organizations, and this is a question mark on its secularism and democracy. India, therefore, has to take steps to restore its tarnished image. India which complains that the trial against Lakhvi has intentionally been dragged over six years but with eight years passed by the case against Aseemanand is not going anywhere either. There has been no breakthrough in the Samjhauta case until now. And under the current BJP government led by Narendra Modi who has been an activist for the Hindu right-wing paramilitary RSS for his entire political career, the chances for a better equation blur. He remains committed to his ideology of Hindutva which says that India should be an exclusive Hindu nation state in which minorities are treated as second-class citizens or worse. The recent heat taken by the BJP-government over the issue of forced conversions is an example in itself and ideological manifestation of the new government. The challenge will always remain for Modi as Prime Minister of a secular state to focus areas that can boost confidence in bilateral ties with Pakistan. Not failing Pakistan at Samjhauta can well be the beginning. Today, the BJP is very much in power. Iy hold the government at New Delhi and at all important states of the country and the main players of the nexus are today part of this government. The players like Sanjive Tripathy, former RAW Chief, Ajit Kumar Doval, former IB Chief and VK Singh, former Army Chief and creator of Technical Support Divion (TDS), an unauthorized terrorist wing of the Indian army for terror operations inside Pakistan, are together under one roof, with no fear of any public or media exposure to this nexus. One can easily estimate that what could be the scale of the lethal activities of the nexus of evils towards regional countries and at what level this nexus will be flourishing and strengthening in coming few months. The current situation at the LoC and long working boundary appears merely to be a trailer of a high voltage action-packed thriller movie.
