The United States grossly interfered in China’s internal affairs, supported the “Taiwan independence” forces and deliberately sabotaged peace across the Taiwan Straits, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday, pointing out the three mistakes the U.S. had made by allowing U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to visit China’s Taiwan region. “The U.S., in disregard of China’s repeated notifications and warnings, was bent on arranging for the so-called visit of the number three figure in the U.S. government to China’s Taiwan region,” said Wang, who was on a visit to Bangladesh. It must be understood that Taiwan is not a part of the United States, but a part of Chinese territory, and the U.S. side has made a public commitment about this, said Wang, adding that the U.S. side’s action is therefore a serious infringement on China’s sovereignty. The Chinese foreign minister said the U.S.’s acts also condone and support “Taiwan independence” forces. “Any country must safeguard national unity and will not allow secessionist forces to behave recklessly.” Wang said the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the Taiwan region has included the pursuit of “independence” in its party program, and in recent years, it has tried every possible means to seek “Taiwan independence” and create “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.” Pelosi openly backed these efforts, siding with the separatists against the Chinese people, he added. The U.S. acts deliberately undermined peace in the Taiwan Straits, Wang stressed, adding the U.S. is accustomed to creating a problem first and then using it to achieve its own strategic agenda.
There are signs that the U.S. is trying to repeat its old tricks by planning Pelosi’s visit and taking the opportunity to increase its military presence in the region, which deserves high vigilance and resolute resistance from all sides, Wang warned. He stressed that the measures adopted by China are legitimate, reasonable, lawful, necessary, open and proportionate. China aims at safeguarding China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, deterring U.S. attempts from “using Taiwan to contain China,” shattering the DPP authority’s illusion of “seeking U.S. support for their independence agenda,” and maintaining peace in the Taiwan Straits and stability in the region, Wang said. Wang said the principle of non-interference in internal affairs of a sovereign state is the “golden rule” of handling state-to-state relations, and the “magic tool” for developing countries to safeguard their sovereignty and security. – CGTN
