Skiing: Vonn at the double with super-G win

ZAUCHENSEE: American Lindsey Vonn was all smiles Sunday after a second World Cup victory of the weekend at Zauchensee, winning the super G with a wide time margin over Lara Gut.As with Saturday’s downhill win at the Austrian resort, Vonn produced an almost faultless run as she attacked the course with gusto to finish in 1min 12.75sec to secure her 73rd career World Cup win.
“It was tough at the bottom, but I really enjoyed the middle part of the course,” said the 31-year-old, who also won the only other super G this season at Lake Louise.
Gut was next at the gate and also started well, but lost time in the later part of the course to finish 0.7sec adrift, while local interest Cornelia Hutter was third at 1.25sec.
After her third place in the downhill on Saturday Huetter, 23, is emerging as the story of ski-mad Austria’s season in which she has been on the podium five times.
The Swiss Gut however remains ahead of Vonn in the World Cup overall standings, albeit by a narrowed 38-point lead as the struggle for the crystal globe approaches its halfway point.
The next stop on the calendar comes Tuesday at Flachau, also in Austria, where Vonn will have the chance to close the gap on Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark’s 86 World Cup wins.
