KARACHI: Former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq is likely to make another comeback to the Pakistan team, but this time as chief selector.
According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to name Inzamam as the head of the national selection committee out of hope to change Pakistan cricket’s flagging fortunes.
Inzamam is currently serving as Afghanistan cricket team’s coach.
Meanwhile, in a reaction to Inzamam’s possible posting as Pakistan cricket’s chief selector, Afghanistan Cricket Board has said that their coach was still in contract with them.
“Inzamam is earning $12,000 as Afghanistan coach…He has not informed about resigning from the position yet,” the board said.
A formal announcement regarding the chief selector’s appointment is expected to be made by the PCB soon, sources say, adding that the batting great has agreed to quit his job as Afghanistan cricket team’s coach.
According to some sources, former wicket-keeper Rashid Latif had also been approached by the board to fill the role of chief selector.
But latest developments put Inzamam as the stronger candidate between the two former captains.
Former head coach Waqar Younis, too, voiced his approval for Inzamam. “Hearing Inzamam coming as chief selector. (Very) good news. Glad PCB now listening to my 2015 recommendations,” Waqar said in a tweet.
Some media reports say the batting great could be posted as chief selector on interim basis, and that Latif would be given the position for a longer period of time.
But the ‘Burewala Express’ wasn’t convinced that such a move would benefit Pakistan cricket at all. “Bad decision to consider interim coach. Still have plenty of time (before) England Tour. Need vision for future planning,” he tweeted. – Agencies
