There is no other option except combing the entire nook and cranny of the country for stamping out terrorists, therefore, the orders of the Army chief to the armed forces to hunt them out has been appreciated by all and sundry in the country. It is, however, a sad reflection on the working of the police and civil administration because the work which they are supposed to do is being done by the armed forces. Chothu gang has not come up in a trice:All those officers who had worked during the past ten years or so as District magistrate and SP in Rajan pur and under whose bailiwick lay the area where these gangsters operated need to be called on the carpet and asked as to why didn’t they take action against them during their stint in office. If they fail to give a satisfactory answer they should be read the Riot Act. If they say their hands were tied because of political interference then the names of the politicians who were sheltering the Chothu gang be made public and an example be made of them by registering criminal cases against them for abetment and handing them down stern jail terms.
It is a pity that politicisation of the police has destroyed this vital institution responsible for maintaining law and order. Its performance in Panjab and Sindh has been pathetic. Till recently the Panjab government was never tired of boasting that there is no such area in the province which is off-limits for the police. Their failure to take on Chotu gang has knocked the bottom out of its claim and it should be ashamed of itself.
POSTSCRIPT:Let us hope where others have failed, Inzamam-ul-Haque would succeed. He has chosen his team of selectors. His first test would be selection of Pakistan’s cricket team for the forthcoming tour of England out of the present lot of players available. If he refused to give ear to politicians in the matter of selection he would be able to pick up the deserving players.
