ISLAMABAD – Former leg-spinner Abdul Qadir Wednesday questioned the wisdom of appointing Inzamam-ul-Haq as chief selector instead of making him the Pakistan team’s batting coach.”The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is unable to pick the right man for the right job.
One can easily see that batting coach’s job would best suited Inzi who has been one of the greatest ever Pakistan batsmen,” Qadir said.”We all know how the green shirts performed in the Asia Cup and World Twenty20 and where they lagged behind (batting).
I appeal to the PCB patron-in-chief to kindly intervene and appoint some cricketer who can run the board in a better way.
If matter won’t be sorted out now, the future of our cricket is not bright,” he said.He said there were many top cricketers in Pakistan who could run the board in a better way than the administrators.”In my view, Majid Khan, Javed Miandad and Zaheer Abbas know cricket way better than the administrators,” he said.
Speaking about the appointment of coach for the national team, he said there should be no head coach and captain should be given the responsibility of the team.
“The captain should also be a member of the selection committee as the players would then fear him and will play with responsibility,” he said.
He said he was totally against the foreign coaches who coach other countries instead of their own.”How a player who earned fame and name because of his country can coach another nation,” he said.
Qadir said the International Cricket Council (ICC) should bind coaches to coach their own country.”We got a lot of talented coaches in Pakistan then why to look for them from abroad,” he said.
Talking about Younus Khan’s incident during the Pakistan Cup, Qadir said first the board allowed him to play in the tournament and when it got criticism from the former cricketers, it pulled Younus out and fined him and now again they allowed playing in Pakistan Cup.
“The PCB officials are poor in making right decisions at right times and cannot handle pressure,” he concluded.
