The prime minister, it seems, has decided to go on a warpath against the PTI and other political element in the country who are zeroing in on him for his and his family’s alleged involvement in the financial shenanigans disclosed in the Panama leaks. He has already embarked on a series of public rallies aimed at neutralizing political campaign of his opponents against him on this score who want him to pack up and go home. Wasn’t Ayub Khan politically shrewder than him as he called it quits the moment he sensed a modicum of public hostility against him on the rise of sugar price in the country in late 1960?Had Bhutto not dilly dallied in announcing fresh elections there would have been a different story to tell today. Taking politically correct decisions at correct and opportune time matters much in politics. Politicians can survive in politics as long as they enjoy high moral ground. Is there no body among the top echelon of his political party who could advise him to step down voluntarily, nominate his successor within his political party who should take over as PM and let competent authorities do the forensic audit for separating the grain from the chaff. That would have been an honorable way of getting out of the political crisis which he finds himself in these days. By sticking to power, come what may, and by using the crutches of his political bed fellows like chief of the JUI[F] to survive in power is not going to help him in the longer run as in that case the anger of the common man over his obduracy might increase manifold and the wrath of the electorate may visit him and his political party with full force during 2018 elections.
Meanwhile the slanging match between the apologists and detractors of the prime minister is assuming a sinister tone. They are blowing raspberries at each other with rare abandon. The brawl between the federal information minister and PTI’s Shafqat Mahmood in a TV talk show the other day did not leave a good taste in the mouth of the viewers. The common man expects a high quality of decorum from their leaders. Tolerance to listen patiently each other’s viewpoint is sadly missing among the politicians in the TV talk shows. It is not uncommon to see them interrupting each other in the mid of their speech and shouting at each other. The TV anchors are helpless creatures who cannot tell them off as they are their guests.
POSTSCRIPT: Omar Akmal continues to misbehave off the field. Younas Khan is senior player. By picking up a quarrel with an umpire and leaving the field in a match all of a sudden certainly did not behove him. In the same manner breaking the window pane in a rush of blood in the dressing room by Ahmad Shahzad after he missed scoring a century was unbecoming of him. The PCB should read the Riot Act to them. These incidents prove, if any proof is necessary, how ill-mannered are some of our cricket players. They didn’t have good primary education.
