Nero should not fiddle while Rome burns. The teeming millions in this country are groaning under abject poverty and they don’t know where their next meal would come from but their so-called representatives sitting in parliament are looking the other way. Had they had an iota of conscience in them they would never have passed the bill in the NA increasing their monthly pay and other fringe benefits manifold. They are themselves inviting the common man to come on the road and to raise the banner of rebellion against them. When will the common man wake up from his deep slumber and give the boot to those politicians and political parties in the elections who have been taking him to the cleaners? When will he see the back of them? One cannot help but praise the chairman Senate Raza Rabbani who declared that he would oppose tooth and nail if any such bill was presented in the Senate by any senator aimed at jacking up pay and allowances of senators.
Work on the Bangalore and new Islamabad airport had begun almost simultaneously but while the former has been made functional by its completion in the scheduled time limit, construction work on the latter is yet to be completed while the overhead cost of this new airport has increased many times over during this period. Our building departments are notorious for lingering on the construction work by frequently making changes in the PC1 with the ulterior motive of scooping fat monetary gains in the process.
The US-Pak relations are not good at the moment. The American Congress and Senate have imposed stringent pre-conditions on Pakistan and unless Islamabad fulfills them the American aid to us would be kept on hold. This is not the first time that the Americans have resorted to such pressure tactics. It is about time our policy makers got rid of American hegemony. Enough is enough. We have been kowtowing to Washington since 1947 on end and our good will and out of the way cooperation with the Americans was never reciprocated by White House to the extent we deserved it.
