At long last Sartaj Aziz did speak the truth when he said that the Americans were fairweather friends, when they need our services they come to us, when they achieve their objective they ditch us. Pakistan, he said very rightly, view the grown and growing ties of India and the US with suspicion. He also very correctly pointed out that Washington should not expect quick results from us in our dealings with the Afghan mavericks when it has itself failed to achieve peace despite presence of its forces in Afghanistan for almost 15 years.
Time was when India romanced with Moscow despite the fact that Washington considered Soviet Union as its enemy number one. It was Pakistan, not India, which acted as a front line state of the US against Moscow in America’s cold war against it. Pakistan sacrificed its relationship with a mighty neighbour like Moscow in order to appease the US. Not one but many instances can be quoted to prove how and when we had played second fiddle to the Americans in international issues as a result of which we incurred tremendous human and monetary losses. We have, undoubtedly rendered more services to the cause of the Yankees in this part of the world than India, therefore, it is shocking to note Washington ignoring us and giving more importance to New Delhi than us. Is this a reward of our services to the US?
Let us hope Sartaj Aziz must have made it clear to the two important dignitaries of the US who called on him the other day in Islamabad that enough is enough. Pakistan has been doing more than what is allowed by its resources to see the back of terrorism, therefore, we shouldn’t be asked to do more. The Army chief has rightly asked the Americans as to why are their drones not targeting terrorists like Mullah Fazlullah?
Meanwhile rumour has it that Sartaj Aziz might be on his way out. He along with Fatimi have been running the show in the Foreign office for quite sometime now and both are being held responsible for the failure of our foreign policy as a result of which we stand isolated today in the world community as never before. It is understood that Fatimi’s days in the Foreign office are also numbered. A formal decision in this respect is expected on the PM’s return home.
