The level and quality of debate in our Parliament leave much to be desired. Our parliamentarians also don’t take interest in the proceedings of both the lower and the upper House of parliament and the speaker and chairman of the national assembly and senate respectively, more often than not have to adjourn the proceedings of these Houses because of lack of quorums. Had the PM been punctual in attending the NA at least once a week when it was in session, things could have improved, insofar, punctuality of its members is concernced but he too comes to the NA once in a blue moon.
The quality of debate in Parliament has fallen down considerably. The likes of Suharwardy, Mumtaz Daultana, Mufti Mahmood, Professor Khurshid Abdul Wali Khan, ZA Bhutto and Ghaus Baksh Bizenjo , to mention a few, are not to be seen today. Quite often the NA looks like a fish market with every member shouting at one another at the top of his voice.
There are many areas of life where there is a crying need of new legislation or where it is essential that amendments be made in the existing statutes. Our legislators are either unmindful or are indifferent to them.
POSTSCRIPT: Once again the Afghan forces opened fire in Torkham when our Authorities started constructing a gate on Pakistani soil for better border management. This was the second incident of its kind in the last few days. Pakistan has once again lodged a formal protest with Kabul. Such unprovoked firing incidents need to be stopped lest Pak-Afghan relations should further deteriorate. It is unfortunate that Afghanistan continues to be a very unreliable neighbor of Pakistan despite large heartedness shown by us to it in many issues.
