Terrorism is certainly not going to go away soon. The recent acts of terrorism in Peshawar last week provided a proof, if any proof was needed, that our enemies are wicked and we cannot, and should not take them lightly. It took Sri Lanka 29 years to see the back of the last terrorist from its soil when only one country had been bankrolling terrorism there, whereas, there are a host of countries which are masterminding terrorism against this country. We have to blame none but ourselves for the mess we have landed ourselves in. To spoil relations with a neighbouring country, as big and mighty as the Soviet Union, after the creation of Pakistan in 1947 at the behest of Washington was a folly for which we are paying heavily even today. Didn’t Bacha Khan forewarn the powers that be not to fight proxy war of Washington against the Soviets in Afghanistan as one day it can boomerang on us? Didn’t the sane element advise the rulers not to play front role in American-led cold war against Moscow? There is no love lost between us and Moscow even today despite our best efforts to mend fences with it. India, right from day one, after the division of the sub-continent has been sparing no chance which could damage us. Afghanistan has always been our unreliable friend. Israel too harbours enmity against us.
Nobody should be surprised when Obama predicts trouble in the region we live in for another one or two decades. How can a country ensure peace to its people when its 1400 square miles long porous border with Afghanistan is open to all and sundry to cross at their will? Why should there be no terrorism in a country whose capital city is infested with thousands of Afghanis along with heavy weaponry in its slums about which our jntelligence agencies have no idea ? Had we introduced replica of Homeland Security System of the US hook, line and sinker soon after nine-eleven things would have been, perhaps, much different today.
