Odds are that soon after Eid there is going to be a political showdown between the government and the opposition. Hitherto it seems that both the PPP and the PTI might join forces in this respect. The possibility of many other political groups joining the fray cannot be ruled out altogether. This will, however, depend on the final decision of the ruling party on the question of the TORs. It can still ward off this showdown if it reaches at some sort of understanding in the matter with the opposition.
The common man is more worried and concernced about the fate of work on the economic corridor which he wants to see continuing uninterrupted than the political shenanigans of the politicians for their petty political objectives. It would be a tragedy of the first magnitude if the mega developmental projects are affected or derailed on account of any political unrest and uncertainty in the country. Let us hope that the politicians on both sides of the political divide would give due consideration to this factor. It is not yet clear what is going to be the final stance of the ANP, JUI(F), MQM, JI, and the nationalist parties of Sind and Balochistan. Are they also going to lend their weight to the poltical forces wanting to see the back of the PM? Many of them are still holding their cards close to their chest? Whose side are they on? Much would depend on their attitude. If they also deserted the camp of the ruling party and jumped on the bandwagon of those who are going to take to the streets, it would be well high impossible for the ruling party to go out on a limb and fight off with the opposition single handedly
The coming few days are going to be a litmus test for the rulers. It would become clear how much political acumen, sagacity and far sightedness are possessed by them.
POSTSCRIPT: The Karachi police has once again disappointed the Karachites with their dismal performance so far in reaching out to the culprits responsible for the kidnapping of the son of Sind High Court Chief justice as well as to the killers of Amjad Sabri. The Sind’s CM must hang his head in shame over the worsening law and order situation in his province. His reputation as a very weak administrator is now proverbial.
