Karachi continues to suffer from acts of terrorism, therefore, there is no option left with the government but to extend the Protection of Pakistan Act and anti- terrorism laws for at least another two years in the country in order to provide legal blanket to the current operation of the Rangers in the province. Recruitment of another 20000 policemen in Sind is also on the cards but further increase in the police force is going to give dividends only if the Army is asked to select it on the pattern it recruits its man power because it is feared that if the civilian government was given this task it would again make a hash of it and only those persons would be selected who are recommended by the politicians as is the norm hitherto in the province. The new policemen would have to be equipped with the latest weaponry and trained in the art of combating urban terrorism.
Let the Sind metropolis has a mayor and let the new mayor, whosoever he may be, follow the example of that famous New York’s mayor twenty years back who turned the tables on different types of mafias who used to rule the roost in New York once and made it as one of the safest city of the world.
The news that an influential tradesman has been giving dictation to the policemen is quite disturbing. Rumour has it that it was at his bidding that the SSP Southern in Karachi who was transferred in the high profile kidnapping case of the son of chief justice Sind High court was reinstated on his job. It means political interference in the posting and transfer of the officers of law and order enforcing agencies hasn’t stopped as yet and this has been taking a heavy toll on the law and order of Sind’s capital.
POSTSCRIPT: There is a forecast of heavy spells of monsoon in the days to come. Some weather experts say we are going to get 40 percent more monsoon rains as compared to last year. Reliable reports indicate that in 40 districts of the country the system that gives advance warning of rains simply doesn’t exist. There are 7 radars and most of them are old and outdated. The system that gives advance warning of rain is sixty years old. This being the position one can well imagine the state of our readiness to meet physical challenge of heavy down pours and the resultant floods in the country.
