The statement of IG Sindh that a prize of Rs 2 lac would be given to any citizen who kills a dacoit was downright ridiculous and the CM Sindh ought to give him a rap on his knuckles for making such a irresponsible statement. Coming from the mouth of senior most police officer of Sindh it amounts to giving a licence to all and sundry to take law into their hands. Wouldn’t it lead to the spread of anarchy in the province?
We have witnessed citizens catching criminals like thieves, dacoits and kidnappers red handedly who are then handed over by them to the police after beating them blue and black with fists and sticks to their heart’s content . To that extent their immediate reaction is quite natural and understandable but if a senior police officer start coaxing them to go a step further and take their lives it is too much and it is just not on. If on the one hand the IG’s statement in question smacks of his frustration over continuous failure of police force in Sindh to eliminate the crimes in the province, on the other , it accepts the fact that the police force under his command is good for nothing which is incapable to rein in the malcontent who have been holding the police force of the province as hostage in their hands.
We know that the police force of this country has been prone to physically eliminating diehard criminals by shooting them point blank and then covering up their crime by showing them in papers as killed in armed clash with it. Policemen are not supposed to kill the criminals. Their job is to get hold of them and then get them tried in a court of law which alone is legally competent to hand down reasonable punishment to them under the law of the land commensurate with the nature of the crime committed by them. Granted that those who upset the applecart of law and order of the country deserve no leniency but they are to be dealt with under the legal framework operative in the country in order to prevent this country from falling into the lap of anarchy.
