The common man of this country already knew that General Rahel Shareef would never try for getting extension in his service after his retirement. The Army Chief has already earned a permanent niche for himself in the World Hall of Fame by his excellent performance in his profession and by his impeccable financial integrity. In the past some Army Chiefs did wangle extension in their service after their retirement but the present army chief is made of a different stuff. He belongs to the family of martyrs who have always given their blood and lives for safeguarding the frontiers of this country. General Rahel Shareef has set up a very good tradition by making it clear that he nurses no ambition to remain army chief after reaching the age of superannuation.
In this country the public servants, mostly the highly placed, never want to retire. They manage to get extension in their service once they reach their retirement age or get themselves posted on contract as consultants without realising that by doing so they are blocking the promotion of many other public servants who are waiting in the wings to get promotion. The same is the case with the politicians. They too want to move in the corridors of power till their number is up and they are called back by their Makers. We don’t have any politician like Sir Winston Churchill who one fine morning called on the British queen to resign from the premiership of Britain. Why? said the queen to him. You have still three years to go in your office. Fresh ideas have stopped coming to me due to my age, Churchill replied and that was that.
Politicians like Zardari must be happy over the announcement of army chief. The corrupt political element in the country is always shit-scared of honest persons like Rahel Shareef, but where would persons like him run if the successor of the army chief turns out to be equally bold, daring and honest officer?
