It is really shocking to read a recent UN report which says that the educational system of Pakistan is 60 years behind the modern educational system in vogue in the developed countries of the world. Not only is the rate of literacy extremely low in this country, the quality of education is also pathetic. On the one hand, the rich and the mighty get their offspring educated in the West and who ultimately become the rulers of this country , on the other the teeming millions of the country who are underfed and half educated are destined to be ruled by a tiny foreign trained elite.
It is horrible to note that 50 lakh children don’t go to schools in this country, whereas , over one crore cannot make it beyond secondary education. The same goes for health sector. 80 percent of our population has no access to medicare. The government hospitals don’t have sufficient beds nor do they have medicine. 70 percent of our population doesn’t get potable water.
There is something terribly wrong with our priorities. Sensible rulers always concentrate on development of their human resources. Was it sensible on the part of the government to spend lavishly on mega projects like motorways and metro bus?. About public transport the least said the better. Pakistan of 1960 was much better than Pakistan of today. We ought to spend on those projects which provide basic necessities of life like medicare, education and potable water , to mention a few, to the common man.
Our rulers should have taken lessons from Mahatir of Malaysia as well as from the Chinese who were able to turn round the economies of their countries in record little time because their priorities were right.
