Sensible cricketers or for that matter all sportsmen call it a day in the prime of their play on their own volition and thus make a graceful exit. There is something inside them which tells them that their time is up and they are past their prime now so the best course for them is to say goodbye to their game. Those who try to cling on to their game and fail to realise that their reflexes are no longer cooperating with them, more often than not, have had to face the ignominy of being dropped by the selectors from the team.
Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi have seen better days. They were once top class players in their respective department. While the former was unplayable as a spinner the latter showed no mercy to any bowler on his day. He was famous for hitting sixers and every time he stepped into the ground with bat in his hand the crowd expected nothing else but sixers from him. Both are now shadows of their past.
The same goes for skipper Misbah ul Haque, Shoaib Malik Umar Gul, Irfan and Younus. Age is no longer on their side. They must now seriously start thinking in terms of calling quits. They too in their hey day served Pakistan cricket team tremendously. There comes a time in the life of every sportsman when he has to vacate his place to a younger player though that is probably the most difficult decision he has to make in his life. Retirement means oblivion and the very thought of it for a person who had always remained in limelight and public glare is very painful.
The PCB must always give a hearty send -off to all the cricketers on their retirement and draw on their rich experience for grooming their substitutes.
