65 years ago on this very day, the 16th October 1951,the first prime minister of this country Liaqat Ali Khan was cut down by the bullet of an assassin in Rawalpindi while he was addressing a public rally.To this day the hidden hands behind his murder could not be exposed.Incidently on the same place 56 years after that incident another prime minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto also met the same fate and her killers too remain untraced up till now.The place where he was killed is now billed as Liaqat park.Incidently both these high profile murder cases were probed by the Scotland Yard without any fruitful results
Liaqat Ali Khan was a man of impeccable financial integrity .He was honest ,to a fault.He remained PM of Pakistan for five years but he died penniless .The government had to appoint his wife as Pakistan’s ambassador in order enable her to make her two ends meet.
He was a feudal Lord in India ,owner of 300 revenue estates but in Pakistan he did not own a house.When his wife pestered him to get an house allotted in his name like other Muslim refugees from India were getting houses allotted in their names in lieu of the property left by them behind in India while migrating to Pakistan,he replied let first of all Muslim refugees from India get a roof over their head, after which I too will try to get a house allotted for myself.Politicians in those days took to politics with a passion of public service.It has now become a very profitable business.People invest money in it to buy seats in Parliament and then scoop fat monetary gains and fringe benefits that go with them for five or six years.The prime ministers who followed him up till the promulgation of first martial law in the country in 1958 ,were,also, by and large,not financially corrupt ,at least and no mega financial scam was linked to their name.
