Government servants whether they belong to civil service, police or judiciary are state functionaries .Every government worth its salt has to depend on them to run the affairs of the state. They should never be disgraced or insulted by their political masters or the opposition leaders in full view of the public even if they had committed some mistake because once their esteem is lowered in the public eye they won’t be able to effectively run the show. Sensible and farsighted are the leaders who give them dressing down or a rap on their knuckles, if it is really needed, one-on-one so that their self-respect is not injured.
It is a pity that we have forgotten all the directives of the Founder of the Nation .One of them was his instruction to the civil servants that they would be answerable only to the state and that they would have to follow law of the land hook, line and sinker. The Quaid-e-Azam had also forbidden the state functionaries specifically not to obey illegal orders of any sitting government which is transitory in nature.
This directive of the Quaid has been blown to smithireens by his followers. In order to tame bureaucracy and make it subservient to their whims and caprices, the successive rulers of this country finished the constitutional guarantee of protection of their services making it dependent on the pleasure of their political bosses.
POSTSCRIPT: The worth of our new players would be put to real test in the current tour of our cricket team to the Down Under where they would be playing on the turning pitches which take turn and bounce. Let us hope that the winning streak of our cricket team continues in the days to come also.
