Most of the Chinese living in Beijing use bicycles instead of any other mode of transport and this is one of the many reasons for their good health. It was, therefore, good to hear that the Mayor of Islamabad who happens to be chairman CDA has been toying with the idea of constructing a separate lane on the capital ‘s roads for the cyclists.
It is heartening that at long last there is somebody in the corridors of power who realises the importance of the cheapest mode of transport which is healthy,to boot.It is not surprising that the CDA chairman has woken up to this idea. What is surprising is that he should have taken so long to wake up
.In point of fact,a separate road should have been laid long ago when road construction had started in Islamabad. That would have saved a lot of money and had also not put the general public to inconvenience .Constructing a separate lane now would be a costly affair but it is worth it.
Both the CDA and the traffic police of Islamabad would have to work overtime to create public awareness about the separate lane for the cyclists so as to ensure that the cyclists stick to the use of separate lane meant for them and the motorists ,truckers and bus drivers also do not enroach upon their preserve and kill them on the road .There is a separate lane for the motor cyclists in Islamabad but they seldom drive in it.Instead they drive in the lanes meant for other types of transport and get killed and injured by the dozen every month .
Both the CDA and the traffic police would ,therefore,be well advised to carry out a media campaign in this matter before making separate lane for the cyclists operational in the federal capital.
