Once again the deadline of return of Afghan refugees to their homeland is being extended up to the end of the next year. There are many skeptics who believe that they would never go back.Would any one from Pakistan who once visits the US or Europe and tastes life there like to return back to the country where he was born?they argue and they certainly have a point there. The Afghans who are born and bred here don’t find any attraction to return to Afghanistan thus forcing their parents also not to think of returning to their place of birth. The quality of life, prospects of business and civic amenities here are much better than the ones that are available in Afghanistan .The new generation of Afghan refugees has become used to the local way of life.
History is a witness to the fact that visitors from the North in the past who had come to the Indian plains in search of greener pastures seldom went back.Over the years they started earning their livelihood here and with the passage of time assimilated themselves in the local society. This is an historical fact which cannot be denied.
POSTSCRIPT:It was a wise decision of Malik Feroze Khan Noon the then prime minister of Pakistan to buy Gwadar from Sultan of Oman and Muscat back in 1958.We should be grateful to Agha Khan who paid 3 million US dollars on behalf of Pakistan to make that transaction happen.India too had an eye on the economic and strategic potential of Gwadar’s coastline and Nehru was visibly unhappy when in a meeting his Pakistani counterpart disclosed to him about the said purchase.Imagine what would have happened to us had India bought this coastline from Oman?
India and the US are visibly upset today over the development of Gwadar as international sea port.
