The other day I tweeted: If I had been General Raheel and had conscience and mindset of MNS, I would have ended up as a trillionaire and an all-powerful ruler rather than settling for ‘worthless’ 90 acres.
The meanings and the spirit behind this tweet were understood by most of my followers and readers but there have been certain thought-provoking and ‘biting’ comments too. Henna Batool, a lady from Hillingdon London— a lawyer by profession, has commented:
“Sir while I take your point, 90-acre land in Lahore is not worthless please.”
It is not indeed.
But WORTH is a relative term.
For a person earning any amount around Rs. 15000 per month, his or her wrist watch that was bought for Rs 3000 some years back is worth weighing in gold. But for a person of Mian Nawaz Sharif’s background a watch worth Rs 1500000 (or more) can be a disposable ‘item’.
The 90-acre land that has made headlines due to “investigative” exploits of some petty and some proud journalists, was evaluated at well over Rs one billion, on the assumption that it is located in Lahore. Yes Bedian Road is in Lahore, but those who have memories of 1965 war should be aware of the fact that Bedian was the canal that stood between the Indian army and the Pak Army.
In the Ayub era, it had been made a practice that the border-area land be allotted to the retiring army personnel according to their ranks and feats. Many generals before General Raheel Sharif had been allotted this kind of land—ranging from 50 acres onwards.
The land allotted to General Raheel Sharif can neither be sold nor urbanized commercially. Its value thus is very close to ‘the fees’ that government is paying to each of the lawyers defending the Sharif family in the Panama case.
Ironically Syed Talat Hussain the renowned anchorperson-cum-analyst (now associated with MNS-backed Jang-Geo group) was not aware of the actual price of the said land when he addressed General Raheel Sharif in a tweet “you have got your reward General. Well done!”
One wonders why the Government of Mian Nawaz Sharif has kept ‘dumb’ about the vicious campaign against General Raheel Sharif and the Army, and not clarified the position.
My tweet was intended to mean: “Had I been General Raheel Sharif, and known that people in overwhelming numbers wanted me to overthrow a corrupt regime, I would have gladly done it, and in the bargain won not only the gratitude of the nation, but also powers to allot even Lahore’s Governor House to my daughter or sons.
You have not been smart General!
