The level of debate among parliamentarians as well as those politicians who are outside Parliament has fallen down considerably in this country. There is a dearth of intellectual content in it. Insiders say a very few of them are interested in reading books. Their grasp on national and international issues is poor. They waste precious time of Parliament by discussing non-issues. Moreover, the. language used by them against one another also leaves much to be desired. The parliament has become an attractive place to sit in, particularly, after the government started paying its members a fat purse in the form of money worth crore of rupees annually for carrying out developmental projects in their political constituencies.
Time was when politicians of the calibre of Hussain Shaheed Suharwardy, Mumtaz Daultana, Maulvi Fareed, Mufti Mahmud, Abdul Wali Khan, Abdul Samad Achakzai, and Abdul Qaiyum Khan, to mention a few, used to sit in Parliament. In their bromides against one another they never indulged in innuendos nor did they resort to character assassination of one another. It was always a treat to listen to their well worded speeches from which the listeners learned a lot. On the contrary what we hear today in Parliament from the mouth of Parliament is a sheer trash. The common man can no longer be misled by them as he is much well informed, wiser and politically mature now as he was before. He is fully capable of knowing what is at the back of their mind.
