It would have been much better if a referendum had been held for ascertaining the wishes of our tribesmen as to their future. Do they really want merger with KPK or are they happy with their present status?Whether they want to do away with their present system of collective tribal territorial responsibility and get it replaced with the police and magistracy system in vogue in the revenue districts?. It is easier said than done to say that FATA is going to be merged with the KPK. There are wheels within wheels in changing the present status of FATA.
One can differ with the politics of Maulana Fazlur Rehman but he has a point there when he says that a referendum on the issue was sine qua non.
No body can differ with the decision of the KPK government fixing dowry amount and also reducing all types of expenditure on marriage ceremonies to a minimum extent. The success of the new legislation on the subject would , however, depend on its implementation. In the past too such steps were taken by various governments but since due follow up action in the form of strict monitoring wasn’t observed in their implementation the desired results could not be achieved . Are the present steps being taken by the KPK authorities going to suffer the same fate or this time the results are going to be somewhat different ?Only time can provide answer to this question.
