Sardar Mehtab Abbasi is a go-getter. Let us hope under his stewardship the PIA would be able to find its feet. The tragedy with our national carrier has been undue excessive political interference in recruitment of staff in its various departments so if there is a need of only ten persons in a department ten persons are employed there. Small wonder a big chunk of its resources has been going into the salaries of its staff. It has accumulated a lot of fat which needs to be cut.
The best course is to privatise it but if it is intended to be run on the tax payers’ money then all the extra baggage that it is carrying would have to be shed. For throwing off its extra baggage the government would have to swallow a bitter pill once in the shape of giving golden hand shake to the extra staff of the PIA which it would be getting rid of . Henceforth the PIA’s management should adopt the austerity measures of the airlines which are making profits and doing a roaring business.
The new chairman of the PIA must study those airlines which are making profits with the much smaller staff than our national carrier has.
Incidents like the one which happened the other day when seven extra passengers were flown to Medina from Karachi in a PIA flight should not happen again and those responsible for it must get their just deserts as it was a clear violation of international safety standards.
