The cat is finally out of the bag. Karzai, whom both Zardari and Nawaz Sharif mistakingly considered as Pakistan’s ally has said Afghanistan has never recognised Durand Line in the past and it won’t recognise it now. It is not difficult to understand whose language he is speaking. New Delhi should not commit the same mistake which it had been committing before the overthrow of kingship in Kabul when it used all resources available with it to raise Pakthoonistan bogey which the people of KPK rejected in unambiguous way. New Delhi should also not forget the danger inherent in reopening a settled border issue duly sanctified by time otherwise it may find itself hoisted on its own petard. What is sauce for the goose should also be sauce for the gander. For instance , what would be its response if, for example sake, Beijing tomorrow comes up with its demand that it doesn’t recognise McMohan Line demarcating its boundaries with India?
Nobody likes reopening issues decided light years ago as this can open up a Pandora box of violence and unrest in the world . What is bygone should be bygone. Kabul too should stop playing into the hands of New Delhi. May one ask it why doesn’t it hand over northern area of Afghanistan where Tajiks live in majority to Tajikistan?
