KARACHI: Pakistan fast-bowler Muhammad Irfan has admitted that he violated the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s anti-corruption code, a board official confirmed to The Express Tribune on Monday.
The world’s tallest cricketer told the board’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) that he was contacted by bookies before the death of his mother, and not during the Pakistan Super League.
But instead of notifying the ACU, as he should have, Irfan admitted that he kept the approaches to himself.
Irfan further said that he was mentally disturbed following the death of his mother, which is why it never occurred to him that he should inform the ACU.
The second edition of the PSL was rocked in its first week when the PCB suspended Islamabad United’s duo Sharjeel Khan and Khalif Latif on corruption charges.
Irfan’s name was also mentioned along with Karachi Kings’ Shahzeb Hasan and Quetta Gladiators’ Zulfiqar Babar in the investigation, but they were not suspended a la the other two.
Hasan has also recorded his statement but it remains unknown whether he too has admitted that he kept the bookies’ advances to himself. – MD
