Zardari has recently said two things in a single breath. He claimed that it is he who is going to make the next prime minister of the country and that he would contest the next polls too.Doesn’t it imply that after winning the polls he won’t become PM because he feels his party won’t pull it off in the polls this time round but he would elect another person for this coveted position as he expects his party to taste victory in Sindh. In other words the PPP co-chairman feels that the next PM would come from some other party in whose favour he would cast his vote.If the PPP wins sufficient number of seats in Sindh that could enable it to come in a strong bargaining position and play a very effective role in tilting the balance either in favour of the PTI or the Nawaz League for the formation of central government. Both these parties in that case would need PPP’s support to form central governnent.Zardari guessestimates that neither the PTI nor Nawaz League would be able to form central government on their own steam and they would naturally have to look to the regional parties like the PPP for their support to come into power in Islamabad.
This is the first time that one sees admission on the part of some leader of the PPP that it won’t win the polls.
Zardari this time round seems to have selected for himself the role of kingmaker realising that he cannot become the king.
The affore-mentioned statement of Zardari also means that he believes that there is going to be a fall in the vote bank of both PTI and Nawaz League.
If the polls are held next year on schedule ,Nawaz League will benefit from them by becoming a majority party in the Senate also after the senate polls which will be held in next February but if the polls are held this year , and if no party gets absolute majority ,as prognosticated by Zardari, the PML would not be able to make a dent in the PPP’s majority in the upper house and this situation suits Zardari.
