The PTI deserves hosannas for holding intra- party elections in which quite a number of party workers have contested elections against the leading personalities inside the party. A party worker even stood against the party chairman Imran Khan. By allowing a panel of candidates who have a difference of opinion with party leadership on many issues to contest polls, the PTI leadership has set up a healthy political tradition which must be welcomed by all the Democratic forces in the country. Atleast a start has been made in the right direction. The PTI would be able now to take lessons from the shortcomings of this intra – party elections and improve things in the subsequent intra- party polls. This is how Democratic traditions take roots in the political parties. It also encourages those who hold reservations on some policies of the high command of the party and enables them to express their opposite views without any fear that they would be thrown out of party if they said something which grated on the party’s leadership.
Imran Khan should, however, be careful while opening the doors of his party to the mavericks from other political parties who have,lately, started jumping on the bandwagon of the PTI. Most of them have a lot to live down. They have been joining his party in the hope that they will get party tickets for the next general elections. If they would not be given tickets they would certainly feel no qualms in deserting the PTI’ s ship also. Make no mistake about it.
