nawazmodiISLAMABAD, February 19: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will likely be meeting his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Washington next month on the sidelines of a nuclear summit hosted by United States President Barack Obama, according to a media reports.
Both Sharif and Modi have accepted President Obama’s invitation to attend a nuclear summit. This summit will be hosted by Obama in Washington on March 31 and April 1. However, considering the volatile relationship between the two neighbouring countries no confirmation has been made about the meet.
“The chances are strong, very strong, but knowing the history of India-Pakistan talks, you cannot be certain about an event until it has happened” said an Indian senior official.
If the meeting does go through, it will the first time that both Indian and Pakistani Prime Ministers will be attending the nuclear security summit, which was started by President Obama in 2010.
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would leave for Washington on March 30.
Nawaz will lead his country at a nuclear summit in March in which the outgoing Obama administration is likely to reach some understanding with recognised and unrecognised nuclear states to control proliferation, media reports added.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will also be among the leaders expected to attend the meeting.
US President Barack Obama will host the fourth and the final Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) on April 1 in Washington.
Leaders from 50 countries and international organisations will also participate.-Online
