There are many who would take the statement of Khursheed Shah with a pinch of salt in which he said his party is going to sever its policy of rapprochement with Nawaz League following killing of the PPP worker in Azad Kashmir recently. The leaders of both these parties are notorious for playing to the gallery. When PPP was in power for full five years the Nawaz League dutifully played out the role of friendly opposition for full five years and now the latter has completed more than half of its constitutional term in office and the PPP has been paying it in its own coin. Bilawal is being groomed by the PPP for becoming the next prime minister of the country, whereas, , both Hamza Sharif and Maryam Nawaz are supposed to wait in the wings for the coveted job of the prime minister during the time when Bilawal completes its stint in the office of the PM. There is, however, a caveat to this underhand understanding between Nawaz Shareef and Zardari. What, if the Providence has something different in store for them? One cannot brush aside lightly the famous time-tested proverb that a man proposes and God disposes. Insiders say that Zia had decided to doff military uniform in 1992 and become civilian president for another five years by handing over the command of the Army to his trusted blue-eyed General Afzaal. What happened with him in 1988 is now history.
There is, however, a force in the argument of the leader of opposition in the NA that whenever the prime minister is in trouble he cuddles up to parliament but whenever he feels secure in power he gives a damn to it. It is really unfortunate that he often makes himself scarce when it comes to attending sessions of the NA. Why does he not set up a healthy democratic tradition by personally answering questions of the members of NA at least once a week like the British prime minister does? Why did the government party not allow a move by the opposition in the NA in which it was demanded that NA should make it incumbent on the PM to personally answer the questions of the parliamentarian every wednesday?
