The figures released by the ISPR the other day regarding up to date progress of Operation Zarb–e-Azb being carried out by our Armed forces for the past one and a half year reveal that 3400 terrorists have been killed and over 21000 thousands of them have been nabbed. These figure also reveal that out of a total cases of 142 against the terrorists sent to the military courts 55 have been decided by the 11 military courts.
It is heartening to note that a substantial progress has been made in the military operation in question but there is certainly no room for complacency. The operation needs to continue till we have seen the back of the last terrorist or till they stand completely annihilated from the face of this region. There are two aspects which would require special attention in this connection. . Firstly, a thorough investigation of the 21000 thousands arrested terrorists would be needed. The Prosecution would have to do proper homework in their cases so that no legal lacunae is left in their case files and they don’t fail in the courts. Experience of hindsight reveals that a substantial number of the arrested alleged criminals are released by the trial courts after giving them the benefit of the doubt because of the failure of the Prosecution to properly conduct cases against them in the courts of law. Secondly, the number of the military courts should be doubled so that the rate of disposal of the cases against the terrorists could be speeded up.
Waziristan has a very inhospitable difficult geographical terrain . It has been rightly billed as a cemetery for the armed forces. Its past history is replete with instances of the failure of military expeditions to gain a foothold in the region. It certainly goes to the credit of our Armed forces for breaking the backbone of the terrorists who had virtually taken over Waziristan after nine-eleven. Today Waziristan is under the firm control of our Army. Our Armed forces have achieved successes in other parts of the FATA too in their crusade against the terrorists which is commendable.
