I personally believe that in this form of democratic system which empowers elected Oligarchs or regional Dons at the expense of the general public, even Imran Khan with all his resoluteness and commitment will need the Divine Blessings and the Almighty’s Help in a big big way to bring about a qualitative improvement and quantitative transformation in the lives of the people of the country.
Thus to put this country on the road to general progress and the people’s prosperity, this system will have to be abandoned, and the road to the election of the Chief Executive of the country through direct vote on the basis of 51% majority, cleared. In fact even the City governments will have to be formed on this principle so as to empower people of not only every region but also of every village town and city.
This can happen only if Imran Khan’s party or any other party that is committed to real change is voted into power with enough strength to amend the constitution. In my view this is not going to happen anytime soon, as the Parliament has two houses and the Senate is unlikely to be controlled by a single party in the near future.
The other option is a Referendum. Let a constitution of more democratic nature and lesser feudal/oligarchic character be prepared by an interim government constituted of proven experts of every walk of life. Then let the people accept or reject this constitution in a Referendum.
The supporters of the indirect democracy which empowers the rich and the influential oligarchs, feudals and businessmen of various constituencies, advance an argument that any shift from this system will create a sense of deprivation in the provinces. This misleading argument is built on either sheer ignorance or calculated self-interest.
How can devolution of power to the District, City, Town and Village level create sense of deprivation among those who are truly empowered?
