Sharmeen Chinoy’s campaign to prove to the world that Pakistan is a land of all kind of injustices and its society is ridden with despicable evil practices seems to be succeeding in a big way. Not only is the West, because of its inherent hatred of Islam, and its logical keenness to find dark areas in the Islamic societies, showering the smart lady with awards and recognition, but also our prime minister has gone out of the way to celebrate her heroics in the realm of art and creativity.
There is indeed no doubt about the fact that the subjects Madam Chinoy has chosen are based on reality, but can she cite the name of one country which is not pregnant with the evil of one kind or the other? Do we have to present to the world the uglier side of our face to win laurels?
Unfortunately our prime minister is either a thorough simpleton or has got too obsessed with the idea of being known as a secular, progressive and enlightened son of this soil, to care about the consequences of such exercises in self-incrimination.
Shouldn’t we brood on the reasons behind the West’s special interest in the characters like Mukhtaran Mai, Malala Yousufzai and Madam Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy?
They have one thing in common. They somehow present to the world that dark side of our face which we should be hiding from our own self.
