The world football tournament is almost half through. It is wide open hitherto and nothing can be said with certainty as to who will lift the cup this time round. Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy, France, Spain , to mention a few, considered to be the giants among football playing nations, have not yet given performance worthy of their reputation. Granted that these teams do have a player or two with extra ordinary football skills who can turn the tables single handedly against any team but what is considered as a team work has been sadly missing in them uptill now. Maybe, they come into their bloom in the knock out stages of the tournament. Messi has disappointed his fans and so has Nymer junior. Saleh too could not come up to the expectations of football fans. Ronaldo, perhaps, is the only player who has shown glimpses of his brilliance in every match that his country Portugal has played.
What a pity that after their retirement the football playing nations haven’t produced any player who could hold a candle to Pele or Maradona !The dribble with which they mesmerised their adversaries was simply remarkable. They used to single handedly win matches for their countries.
It is a treat to watch the beautiful landscape of Russia shown by the TV while telecasting live these football matches. Putin has certainly succeeded in carrying out a big PR exercise through this tournament in improving the public image of his country. Up till now this tournament has been a great success and the Russian authorities deserve hosannas for conducting it excellently.
