The hero of rigging since 1988 is shocked to learn in 2018—thirty years later—that he and his party can’t rig at the scale, rigging has been practiced in Pakistan since very very long. The charges of rigging in March 1977 had led to a massive movement of the United opposition (Pakistan National Alliance) against the Bhutto regime and ultimate to the Military takeover on the 5th of July 1977.
Mian Nawaz Sharif has quite ruefully complained that not allowing him to ensure the electoral results of his choice amounts to pre-poll rigging against him and in favour of his opponents.
Mian Nawaz Sharif had not thought till April 2, 2016 that he would ever be entering into an electoral contest the outcome of which he would not be able to ensure beforehand. Nor had he thought even in his wildest thoughts he would not only end up as a disqualified ex-Prime Minister in the year to follow but also find himself alongwith his children under trial on criminal charges of high corruption and money-laundering.
Till April 2, 2016, not many in Pakistan outside students of geography knew about Panama. But then suddenly the word Panama struck Pakistan and its people with the force of a clap of thunder.
The over-confident and complacent Sharif family was caught unaware of what was coming. From Hussain Nawaz’s statement “ALHAMADOULLAH all these properties are mine—ours,” to the statement of MNS himself in the National Assembly that open-and-shut proofs of legal movement of money for legal businesses were available with him as and when required, every move on the part of the residents of Jaati Umra led them to a quagmire from which there was simply no escape.
I believe strongly in God’s Justice. Mian Nawaz Sharif instead of targeting Justice Saqib Nisar and his colleagues in the Supreme Court, should look up and make an honest and impassioned plea for forgiveness.
