The common man has welcomed the publication of an advertisement in newspapers giving the date on which the costly luxury cars at the disposal of the prime minister are being auctioned off this month. Our past rulers were not ashamed of themselves by driving in these luxury cars fully knowing that they could not run even the day-to- day affairs of the country without foreign loans.
It is a fallacious argument that if these cars were auctioned how are we going to conduct the visits to this country of foreign heads of state ?From where would limousines arranged for them? The question is:Don’t the visiting dignitaries know that we are a poor country which cannot even run its kitchen without the IMF loans? They would appreciate our simplicity in the matter. Their mindset is quite different from that of our rulers and bureaucrats who have made it an habit to adopt a pompous life style at the expense of taxpayer’s money. Prince Philip , husband of Queen Elizabeth , was once on a state visit to Islamabad. The Foreign Office sent a luxurious limousine to the airport to fetch him to the President House. When the door of that luxury car was being opened by the protocol officer on duty for him to sit in it, the spouse of the the British queen who is notorious for his off-the-cuff remarks and gaffes sardonically asked him. ‘Do you still use such big cars?We have since long discarded them’.
It is, however, extremely necessary that due care be exercised while auctioning off these vehicles as they are quite costly. As a measure of abundant caution, the auction should be closely monitored so that it fetches reasonable amount. In future, only small staff cars be purchased for those for are officially entitled for their use.
