When would the rule of various mafias end in this country? The other day it was disclosed in the meeting of senate’s standing committee for national health that an injection which is often used in surgical operations and which costs Rs 27 is being sold in the market at Rs750. Where is the Drug Regulatory Authority? What is it for?Since its inception what has been its performance?Don’t the taxpayers have the right to know about its working?
Insiders know there are many doctors working in the country’s hospitals who are holding fake degrees. There are mafias galore in this country and medical profession is no exception, who have spread their tentacles so deep in various walks of life that it would be helluva job to root them out.
There is a room for improvement in almost every branch of medical science in this country. Foremost is the role of the Pakistan medical and dental council which has to doubly ensure that the medical colleges that are operating in the country fulfil the necessary pre-requisites and basic requirements for their functioning. Only quality medical colleges can churn out quality medicos. If any other consideration except merit would be kept in view while granting admission to candidates seeking medical profession then God be with us.
Strict control on the manufacture of medicines by the pharmaceutical firms is also essential. Marketing of sub-standard and spurious medicines is like playing with the life of the ill . It is again the role of drug inspectors that becomes important here. Unless they come down with a heavy hand on the manufacturers and sellers of sub-standard drugs to the gullible masses things are not going to improve at all.
