Maulana Sami-ul-Haque who had survived open heart surgery a few weeks back in a Rawalpindi hospital couldn’t survive knife attacks on his chest by his assailant in the same city on last Friday and joined the great majority. He was the son of a great father , a noted Islamic jurist, late Maulana Abdul Haque, who founded famous Haqania seminary in Akora Khattak, Nowshera. Leading ulema sat at his feet to take lessons in Islamic jurisprudence from him. Such was the extent of his popularity in Akora Khattak that even at the height of its mass appeal in the 1970s, the PPP couldn’t win election in his political constituency He was the undisputed leader of his area where he was revered and respected because of his honesty, piety, religious knowledge and simplicity. Once a PPP candidate Nasrullah Khattak lost to him by a very big margin in the general election. After his death his mantle passed on to his son Maulana Sami-ul-Haque. The Taliban gave their ear to him as late Mullah Omar had once remained his disciple in his seminary.
After the demise of Mufti Mehmood, the JUI split into two factions one headed by Maulana Sami-ul-Haque and the other by Maulana Fazlur Rehman. The latter too had received his early education from the same seminary which was once headed by the father of Maulana Sami-ul- Haque and now by him. Maulana Sami-ul-Haque had once remained a partner in power with the MMA in the KPK but, lately, his faction was supporting the PTI. Whether or not his successor continue with the same policy, only time would tell.
Maulana Sami-ul- Haque had remained senator for a long time.
