Legendary Bai Zhijun is prominent leading world class movie maker from Xi’an, Shaanxi province of China. Undoubtedly, animated movie “Three Drops of Blood ” is a masterpiece of Bai Zhijun.
” Three Drops of Blood”, one of the classic masterpieces, was composed in 1918 and produced one hundred years after in 2018 under the direction of great movie maker Bai Zhijun. A letter of credit definitely goes to him. Bai Zhijun is the first person to use animation to produce Qinqiang opera. “Three Drops of Blood” Consists of twelve episodes. It is a pride production of Shaanxi Zhongshan Culture Media Co.Ltd. The script is derived from ‘ Yue Wei Thatched Cottage Notes’, a popular Qing Dynasty Classical Chinese novel written by Ji Yun, a scholar of the Imperial Academy, in his twilight years. The theme of the story touch upon ancient band apocryphal issues, the emperor’s court, interpersonal relations and textual research on the classics of the upper class meanwhile involving folklore, anecdote, medical science, divination and astrology, the tales of gods, ghosts and goblins are discussed among the lower classes. Covering all walks of life, these stories elegant, popular, Orthodox or fantastic reflect contemporary social, laying bare several of its contradictions, an illustrating the good and the evil conduct of the various social classes of the day.
While Zhou Renrui, a merchant from Shanxi was doing business in the neighboring province of Shaanxi, his wife died during the birth of twins. Zhou Renrui raised the elder Tianyou selling the younger one to Li Sanniang who lacked a male heir. Li Sanniang renamed the boy Li Yuchun and engaged him to her daughter, Li Wanchun. His business a failure, Zhou Renrui returned from Shaanxi with Tianyou. Unfortunately, Zhou Renxiang, his younger brother, forcibly occupied the family property and refused to acknowledge Tianyou as his nephew. When Renxiang reported Renrui to Wutai County Court for mixing the family bloodline, the official incharge, Jin Xinshu ruled that Renrui was not the Tianyou’s biological father, based on an absurd ” blood drop test”described in an ancient text and separated him from his father. Meanwhile, by the time Yuchun had grown up, Sanniang had passed away. Ryan Ziyong, a young local ruffian, coveting Wanchun for her beauty, counterfeited a marriage contract to force her to marry him. Once again, Jin Xinshu relied on his text, leading him to rule that Wanchun and Yuchun were blood relatives. On her wedding night, Wanchun fled her unwanted suitor. During his search for Tianyou, Zhou Renrui encountered Wanchun’s wet nurse, bringing her to court to act as his witness. But Jin Xinshu, the official, once again elected to trust his text and refused to believe that Niuwa was the biological son of Zhou Renxiang. Later, Tianyou met Yuchun and they joined the army together where they were granted official positions for their military exploits.This allowed them to bring Jin Xinshu to trial and redress his erroneous decisions. Finally, Jin Xinshu was dismissed from office for his absurd dependence on subjective judgements based on an ancient text and the family was reunited. Through his representation of contemporary Chinese society’s complex interpersonal relationships in this story revolving around a superstitious judge Fan Zidong aimed to warn the people that ” Blind belief in what you have read in book is as mindless as believing in nothing” , a moral with profound practical significance in that era.
