ISLAMABAD, December 3: United States President Donald Trump addressed a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan seeking Pakistan’s support in negotiating peace settlement in Afghanistan.
According to a Foreign Office press release, president Trump termed the matter as a regional priority. In the letter, he also acknowledged that the war had cost both US and Pakistan. He has emphasised that both countries should explore opportunities to work together and renew partnership. The FO statement also read that since Pakistan has always advocated a political settlement to end war in Afghanistan, US decision is welcomed.
“Pakistan reiterates its commitment to play a facilitation role in good faith. Peace and stability in Afghanistan remains a shared responsibility,” the statement read.
Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry confirmed Trump’s call for support. “President Trump has written a letter. He has asked for Pakistan’s cooperation to bring the Taliban into talks,” Chaudhry told Reuters.-Agencies
