Every patriotic Pakistani is saddened at the approach of mid of the 12 th month every year. The first fortnight of December brings to the mind’s eye the black days of December 1971 when India exploiting the political crisis inside Pakistan generated by the short-sighted ness of some political element inside this country succeeded in dismembering Pakistan.
Heavens would not have fallen had the majority party Awami League been given an opportunity to form its government in the capital! After all it had won the polls. Had Mr Bhutto decided to sit in the opposition in the National Assembly and in the meantime reorganised his party in the eastern wing of the country also who knows he might have swept the polls in the then east Pakistan also in the next elections! But it seems patience was in short supply to him and he couldn’t wait till the next general election.
For the sake of argument even if we admit that Sheikh Mujibur Rehman was going to declare unilateral independence had he come to power, we would have atleast parted ways in that case in a decent democratic and civilised manner and thus would have been spared of the ignominy of a military debacle resulting out of a botched military action there!
It is futile now to shed tears on what befell us in December 1971. There is a need to learn lesson from that tragic episode in our history. We must avoid committing the blunders that distanced our Bengali brothers. Their main bête noir against one of the province of the country was that it was treating them step motherly in very aspect of life. We ought to ensure justice and FairPlay in the distribution of national wealth amongst all the federating units forming the federation.
