Asghar Khan must be turning in his grave over the shoddy manner in which the various investigation agencies of the country have dealt with his writ petition in the Supreme Court. The lukewarm manner in which they have been dealing with it provides sufficient proof, if any proof is needed, as to how the big and the mighty in this country manage to escape punishment through their political clout. The government must clarify its position in the matter. The ruling party was quite gung-ho when it was in the opposition to see the accused named in it getting their just deserts . Let us hope there is no change in its stance now even after the reluctance of the FIA to follow it up in the apex court on the plea that it hasn’t sufficient evidence in the matter to proceed against the alleged accused.
The common man had noted with concern the public utterances of some religious elders who are notorious for their sit-ins in Islamabad against the Army and was happy when the government arrested them. There is no gainsaying the fact that the speeches made by them smacked of inciting unrest in the armed forces . These religious bigwigs should have been made to pay through their nose for the damage to the public and private property caused by them during their agitation in various cities . They should have been also booked for rebellion and handed over to summary terrorists ‘s court for trial. It is unfortunate that most of these accused have been proceeded against under the much milder Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance and most of them have been released from the jail by the high courts.
If any underhand compromise was made with them due to some political expediency and they were let off the government would have to pay a heavy price for it in future. They would construe it as a weakness of the government and taking heart from it might create bigger political and administrative problems for the government tomorrow.
