Imran Khan often said that the only way he could fulfill his promise of job creation and improved services for the people was by dealing a death blow to dynastic politics. The PML-N and PPP have had alternatively held power since 1988 but failed to deliver. In fact, Panama Leaks came as a bolt from the blue whereby PML-N stood exposed and Sharifs are facing charges for corruption and indicted for amassing wealth beyond means. PPP leaders are facing cases for indulging in corrupt practices and money laundering through fake accounts; and the situation does not bode well for the party. Therefore, PPP and PML-N have joined hands to protect their wealth, and also to survive as political parties, because if Imran Khan can improve the economy and deliver to the people, it will be an end of Zardari and Sharifs’ politics.
Defying predictions of some analysts and commentriat, Prime Minister Imran Khan has been able to muster support of friendly countries. Saudi Arabia and UAE have given packages comprising deposit for $ 3billion each and $3 bn credit for oil. Both these countries are poised to invest in establishing oil refineries and other projects in Pakistan. Islamic Development Bank has agreed to give credit line of $4.5 bn ($1.5 bn per year for three years. In addition to investment in CPEC projects, China has reportedly given $ one billion grant, Malaysia and Turkey are also considering to help Pakistan, who hold Imran Khan in very high esteem. PPP leader and former Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani said that the credit for the above packages goes to the army chief, who has been shunting up and down to those countries. Shahbaz Sharif on the floor of the assembly expressed similar views.
As a matter of fact, this is an admission of COAS Qamar Javed Bajwa’s contribution. But PML-N and PPP leaders have been critical of military establishment for interfering in politics. It has to be mentioned that Memogate scandal during PPP government and Dawn Leaks during PML-N government were reflective of their designs against military establishment. Anyhow, the fact remains that army chief does not seek favors from those countries for his person but to extricate Pakistan from the mess PPP and PML-N leaders had created. They have been wittingly or unwittingly trying to destabilize Pakistan’s economy to appease their masters. Of course, the US would exert pressure on Pakistan through the IMF to reduce spending on defence and also the measures that would burden the country and the masses. It was in this backdrop that Finance Minister stated that Pakistan would not compromise its security and ultimate deterrence.
It is an open secret that the US and some European countries want India to act as a hegemon in the region, which Pakistan will never accept. They are against CPEC, as during recent negotiations with the IMF, officials had stated that Pakistan would have to give details of China’s loans and repayment’s schedule, as Pakistan would not be allowed to pay back China’s loans from IMF package. But Pakistan rejected those conjectures. However, Pakistan’s chattering classes are nonplussed and fail to understand as to how PTI government has been able to arrange funds that are much more than the IMF package. In their hearts they must be realizing the fact that Imran Khan is an icon for change for the better; he is presentable, credible and a visionary. This is the reason that he is respected and revered in world capitals. In Pakistan, he maintains harmonious relations with the pillars of the state and other institutions.
