Time was when there used to be one TV channel in the country. It churned out a variety of quality programmes covering almost every aspect of life including light, folk and classical music, mushaira, drama, film, general knowledge, current affairs etc etc. Granted that it was state-controlled and it didn’t enjoy the unfettered freedom of expression like the present day electronic media which comprise umpteen TV channels. A critical study of electronic media would reveal that while the number of TV channels has increased manifold, the quality of their programmes hasn’t improved correspondingly.
After seeing a plethora of political talk shows at prime time every evening one feels as if there is nothing else to discuss about except politics in this country. The high-pitched voice of the participants of these talk who appear to be high blood pressure patients grate on the ears of the listeners. Taking in view the cacophony of drivel it seems that they consider the TV viewers as deaf. Gone are the days when due care was taken by the programme producers of both TV and radio of the pronunciation and woe betide those broadcasters who mispronounced any word either in the news bulletin or in live drama. No longer is the case now. The broadcasters today are taking too much liberty with the spoken word in the idiot box.
Gone are the days also when Radio Pakistan , now known as Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation , used to hold live musical nights on the advent of spring season every year in its premises every March in which leading singers of the country sang . The said musical concerts were spread over three nights , one for light music, the second for light classical and the third for classical.
