Zardari is in a dilemma. He wants to attend death anniversary of his spouse Benazir scheduled for 27th of this month but is shit-scared of his possible arrest in fresh corruption cases on his landing at Karachi. He visited Saudi Arabia recently ostensibly for performing Umra but insiders say the object of his visit was to request the Saudi king to intercede on his behalf with relevant authorities in Pakistan for getting an assurance that he won’t be arrested on his visit to Pakistan. The next couple of hours would decide the fate of his request. Are the Saudis going to interfere in the present political situation in Pakistan? Our rulers are prone to giving receptive ears to whatever the Saudi monarchy tells them. Didn’t Parvez Musharraf stop trial of Nawaz Sharif on the request of the then Saudi monarch in 2000 and allow him to fly into Riyadh for staying there on a sell-imposed political exile for a decade? The prime minister has a soft corner in his heart for the Saudi king and princes and if they plead the case of Zardari sincerely he won’t disappoint them.
The CM had to extend the powers of the Rangers for another sixty days with a heavy heart. The entire traders’community of Karachi along with people belonging to almost all shades of public opinion were up in arms against the Sind government’s dilly dallying in the matter of extension of powers of Rangers as all of them firmly believed that their operation against the criminals has succeeded in improving the law and order situation in the city which had slipped out of the hands of the local police. The CM was left with no option but to extend their powers, otherwise, he would have incurred the wrath of the common man in Karachi.
It is , however, extremely essential that the Rangers should bring in more transparency in their operation and devote serious attention to effective prosecution of their cases in the courts of law so that the arrested criminals get their just deserts.
