Tax Amnesty schemes put a premium on corruption. They are a mockery of justice and FairPlay. Why on earth persons in possession of black money be given an opportunity to pay a pittance as tax on their ill- gotten money and get it whitened. These tax amnesty schemes are being given since long and have become a regular feature of our national economy. The would-be evaders of income and wealth taxes are secure in the knowledge that they will get away with their crime through these schemes even if they make money through unscrupulous means. When this scheme was being introduced for the first time in the country there were many who had opposed it on the plea that it would cause more harm than good to the country’s economy and would send a wrong signal to the money launderers also . Time has proved them correct.
The country’s economy simply cannot be run in such a manner. A big portion of it is still undocumented. The common man of this country had pinned great hope on the present rulers that they would be carrying out its documentation in the first instance but it seems that like their predecessors they too have decided to take an easy course by deciding not to take on the tax evaders as most of them move in the corridors of power Only 7 lac people in this country are paying income tax and 90 percent of them are those monthly wage earners whose income tax is deducted at the source from the monthly pay. It is a sad reflection on the performance of our tax collecting agencies. Either they are scrim shanking in their duties or their hands are tied by the rulers . There cannot be any third reason for their failure to extend the tax net.
